Loukoumades

Loukoumades are small, golden-fried Greek dough balls that are very similar to what many people know as doughnut holes. They are characterized by a distinct texture that is thin and crispy on the outside with a very light, airy, and fluffy interior. This texture comes from a simple yeast-based dough that is dropped into hot oil to fry until it turns a deep golden brown. Traditionally, these treats are served warm and are heavily drenched in a sweet honey syrup, then finished with a dusting of ground cinnamon and a topping of crushed walnuts or sesame seeds.

Their history is incredibly long, stretching back to ancient Greece. In fact, they are often cited as the oldest recorded dessert in the world, dating all the way back to the first Olympic Games in 776 B.C. At that time, they were known as "honey tokens" and were presented as prizes to the winning athletes. The modern name actually stems from the Arabic word luqma, which translates to "morsel" or "small bite." Because of their popularity during the Ottoman Empire, you can still find various versions of this dessert throughout the Middle East, the Balkans, and the Caucasus.

In Greek culture, loukoumades are a staple at large celebrations like weddings and religious festivals. They are specifically associated with the feast of the Epiphany on January 6th. While the honey and cinnamon version remains the classic choice, modern shops have updated the recipe to include a wide variety of toppings.
